"You can pleasure me while I wash a few
dishes," said Female289E. "Lick my ass
while I finish these, won't you, Male501E?"
Of course, no clothes means no pockets, so everybody's two necessities are an electronic ID device worn on a cord around
the neck and a "Wrist-Com." (Holy Dick Tracy, Batman!)
Lesbian sex is common in 'Tomorrow's World'
As I walked along the hallway, a female came out of her apartment and was surprised to see me walking alone. ... "Well, come right in. You can
pleasure me while I wash a few dishes," she said. So I come in and I do as I am told. ... She took hold of my erect cock and led me over to the
kitchen area. We embraced, then kissed for a few minutes, then she said, "Lick my Ass while I finish these, won't you, Male501E?" I knelt down
and took hold of her fine ass. She had just washed and was scented nicely. I licked up and down her beautiful ass. She arched her back so I could
target her pussy better. ... Some time and not a few moans later, she announced she was done with the dishes. Female289 took hold of my cock again
and led me out on to her outdoor balcony. "Now lie down. I'm going to ride that little cock of yours." ... I held her bald head and we kissed
deeply. She sat up and shrieked & moaned as she rode faster. ... She rode me for maybe 15 to 20 minutes. Then my Wrist Com chimed and Female401
was on the line. "Yes, Female, I am here in 289. Female 289 is just enjoying me."
"Oh, I'll come right away and help."
Excerpt from the novel.
~ Steve Nelson
Although sex in this future is considered an obligation, and is often conducted in public, it's paradoxically both
personal and impersonal. For example, the story's hero develops a mutual attraction with several of the women who are assigned to his care,
starting with one of the nurses in the hospital where he was revived from his long sleep. And yet he also has a series of spontaneous encounters
with women he meets while exploring his new world.
One that I especially enjoyed is almost comically off-handed. A woman invites him into her apartment where she's doing
some kitchen chores, and asks him to lick her ass, then fuck her from behind, while she finishes washing her dishes! It gets you thinking about
a high-tech future without mechanical dish-washers, but with presumably unbreakable dinnerware. I'd hate to think of rinsing fragile
china while in the throes of orgasm.
A theme in Nelson's work that shows up in a lot of sci-fi is de-personalization, reducing individuals to numbers. As it
happens, the number corresponds to its owner's apartment number, which obviously makes it easy for the numbered Males and Females to hook up. Our
hero protests against this, though not very strongly. He asks his assigned companion Female401E if he can call her just "Female." The numbers also
make me think of that other near-universal trope in futurist sci-fi: the uniforms. Remember the satirical line "There'll be Spandex jackets for
everyone" from Steely Dan's "I.G.Y."? That led a number of comics to wonder, "Will we get to vote on the uniform?" So in that context, I wonder
how the vote was taken to have uniform nudity as the standard.
Getting it on while getting around
I can't finish without noting one of the quirkiest touches in Nelson's sexual utopia. It seems that one result of the
centuries of genetic engineering our first-person narrator experiences is a novel mode of transportation. Because women have become so light-weight,
and men so stalwart, women don't walk any great distances. Instead, they ride. And what they ride is the erect penis of any likely man heading in the
same direction. The phrase "Going my way?" takes on a whole new meaning in this context. Talk about hooking up!
So imagine, if you will, the streets and public spaces of a compact city
under a dome, with burly, muscular naked bald men walking to and fro. Tiny naked bald women are clinging to the men's bodies, straddling their erections.
Each woman's vagina is filled by her "mount's" penis, her legs wrapped around his waist. As part of the process, of course, the man's hands are cupping
the woman's naked buttocks; the woman's breasts pressed against the male chest; and the two are face to face as she rides him.
It turns out, as Nelson describes this intriguing transit system, these rides often culminate in orgasm. This is facilitated by
an abundance of comfy couches, stools and other furniture, intended for sex, placed throughout the city's public spaces and even on its tram system.
I could go into literary-critic mode and address matters of style and dialog, or parse the psychological
plausibility of the plot. But that misses the point of this charming, and to my mind, entertaining, bit of literary junk food. For anybody who, like
me, finds nudity and its connection with sexuality to be endlessly fascinating, this tale has the potential of creating some arousal, and maybe
of stimulating the reader's imagination, too.
This story has a sequel that's available as an e-book. See the link below.
