The world's first motion pictures were mostly nudes, made from ground-breaking photographs by English-American researcher Eadweard Muybridge in 1884. |

Muybridge rigged a series of still cameras with electrically activated shutters set to go off at short
intervals. The individual images from as many as two dozen cameras were published in sets, as shown in the center.
Later, as animation technology matured, Muybridge's frames were put into motion to create the world's first
moving pictures. |

Some commentators have speculated that Muybridge's motives were not 100 percent scientific. Certainly some of his sequences with two naked women together suggest that he was intrigued by female eroticism. It's also possible that the models had their own reasons for touching each other in the ways seen here. |

Women smoking cigarettes were considered scandalous in the late 19th Century. But
these models are naked, so as scandals go the tobacco was pretty small stuff. And
the pictures were taken in California, where unconventional lifestyles have always
enjoyed greater acceptance. |
